Camping out in scenic Virginia

Whether you’re “roughing it” in a tent, cabin, RV or SUV, hundreds of campgrounds can be found throughout the more than 48 Virginia state parks and natural areas, four national parks and two national forests. This year six Virginia state parks celebrated their 70th anniversary: Douthat, Westmoreland, Hungry Mother, Fairy Stone, Staunton River and Seashore, now called First Landing.

First Landing State Park on the Chesapeake Bay has the distinction of being the most visited park in Virginia, and is recorded in the National Register of Natural Landmarks. The park is also listed among the best campgrounds in Virginia according to the guidebook The Best In Tent Camping: Virginia.

Back-to-basics camping

Also listed in the book as one of the top 20 campgrounds in North America is Big Meadows Campground, 640 treeless acres of plants and wildlife in Shenandoah National Park. There are no water or electric hookups here, so get ready to sleep under the stars.

SUV and truck camping

If you prefer to sleep in your vehicle, many truck tents and campers are available that hook right up to your pickup or SUV. Get started planning your overnight adventure now.

Beach camping

Pitch your tent on the beautiful beachfront at North Landing Beach Riverfront Resort, located just minutes from bustling Virginia Beach. Get back to nature at this campground situated in the heart of the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and North Landing River Preserve.
